Hitchcock was Pastor of the Second Church in Pembroke. Paul Dudley endowed the Lecture in 1750; it is Harvard's oldest endowed lecture. Originally its subjects were limited to natural religion, revealed religion, the validity of ordination, and "the Romish Church." Today the latter has been changed to 'Protestant-Catholic Relations.'
