[Jayne, Dr. David]:

DR. D. JAYNE'S EXPECTORANT.

[Philadelphia?: mid-19th centur 16pp. One folded elephant folio leaf, untrimmed, uncut, with uniform light toning. Illustrations. Very Good. "This invaluable medicine is daily effecting some of the most astonishing and wonderful cures that have ever been known." Dr. David Jayne, descended from a line of clergymen, created Dr. Jayne's Family Medicines, a little empire that lasted over a hundred years. He founded the Company in New Jersey in the 1820's and moved it to Philadelphia in 1850. His pamphlet describes his Expectorant [cures everything from hives and consumption to "every other disease of the Lungs and Breast"], directions for its use, his hair tonic, Tonic Verfimuge, Ague Pills, and other products; with a Catalogue of Diseases and Their Remedies. A delightful array of diseases and cures is presented, with illustrations of "Symptoms of Worms," Goiters, Scrofulous Diseases of the Skin, and other such. Ipicac, opium, and digitalis were evidently the staple ingredients of his tonics. A rare item, evidently located only at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Not in Romaine or Winterthur. OCLC 49037326 [1].
