[Astor Place Opera House Fire]:

ACCOUNT OF THE TERRIFIC AND FATAL RIOT AT THE NEW-YORK ASTOR PLACE OPERA HOUSE, ON THE NIGHT OF MAY 10TH, 1849; WITH THE QUARRELS OF FORREST AND MACREADY, INCLUDING ALL THE CAUSES WHICH LED TO THAT AWFUL TRAGEDY! WHEREIN AN INFURIATED MOB WAS QUELLED BY THE PUBLIC AUTHORITIES AND MILITARY, WITH ITS MOURNFUL TERMINATION IN THE SUDDEN DEATH OR MUTILATION OF MORE THAN FIFTY CITIZENS, WITH FULL AND AUTHENTIC PARTICULARS.

H.M. Ranney, New York: 1849 32pp, stitched, original printed front wrapper [chipped at extremities]. Sketch frontis. Some loosening. Good+. This pamphlet blames the tragic riot and resulting deaths on Forrest's pathological jealousy for his fellow actor Macready. Each man had his ardent fan club. One Judson, perhaps with Forrest's help, led partisans seeking to disrupt Macready's performance of Macbeth. A major civil eruption occurred, the mob gutting the building and the police and militia jumping into the fray. Sabin 54027.
