The first edition under this title, with later printings in the 1880's. The first page after the title leaf is the only page of text. It explains the book's 'useful hints for draftsmen' on 'tracing and transfering' and 'how to prepare India ink.' The plates show various type styles-- Roman, Italic Roman, Gothic, Spured Alphabets, Old English, German text, Church text, among others-- in a plethora of fonts and designs, some quite elaborate and ornamental.
