Leaming, Jeremiah:

THE EVIDENCES FOR THE TRUTH OF CHRISTIANITY, IN A SERMON, WITH AN APPENDIX. PREACHED AND PUBLISHED, BY...RECTOR OF THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH AT STRATFORD, IN THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT.

Thomas and Samuel Green, opposite the Post-Office, New Haven: 1785 27, [1 blank] pp. Stitched, untrimmed with some corners turned, light to moderate wear About Good+ "First printed at New York in 1772" [Evans], with slightly different title. This is the second of three 18th century American editions. Leaming is moved by "the absolute Necessity there is, that People should know what plain Evidence there is, for the truth of the Christian Religion." Calling the resurrection of Christ "a Matter of Fact," he says that, "Every rational Being is as good a Judge of a Matter of Fact, as the greatest Man upon Earth." Leaming warns that "Infidelity is making its way into this land," propagated by "those who make morality the whole of religion" and who thus "take away every motive to the practice of it." Evans 19059. Trumbull 965.
