[Morton, George]:

THE BOOK FOR THE NATION AND THE TIMES. BY A CITIZEN U.S.N.A.

William S. & Alfred Martien, Philadelphia: 1864 12mo. 64 pp, dbd. Original printed and decorated wrappers. Old institutional stamp. Very Good. The author, whose identity is rendered by NUC, seeks "the blending of the Bible and our Constitution." That can only occur by amending the latter to correct its major defect: "There is no God recognized in it, for the nation to look to for help." Especially is this necessary in a time of civil war. The author calls slavery "the sin of the nation" and the "cause of the civil war, and the resulting national calamities." We have been "blinded to the evils of slavery," partly because "Bible advocates of slavery" have gone unanswered. FIRST EDITION. Sabin 6345. 396 NUC 0803512 [9].
