Gladstone, W.E.:

THE VATICAN DECREES IN THEIR BEARING ON CIVIL ALLEGIANCE: A POLITICAL EXPOSTULATION. BY THE RIGHT HON...MP TO WHICH ARE ADDED: A HISTORY OF THE VATICAN COUNCIL; TOGETHER WITH THE LATIN AND ENGLISH TEXT OF THE PAPAL SYLLABUS & THE VATICAN DECREES BY THE REV PHILIP SCHAFF, DD FROM HIS FORTHCOMING 'HISTORY OF THE CREEDS OF CHRISTENDOM'.

Harper & Brothers, New York: 1875 Original printed wrappers [a bit of edge and spine chipping], stitched 168, 6 advt, [2 blanks] pp. Else Very Good. Although Gladstone considers public "alarm at the aggressive activity" of the Roman Catholic Church "groundless," he calls "the Pope of Romea trespasser upon ground which belonged to the civil authority, and that he affected to determine by spiritual prerogative questions of the civil sphere." No one can become a Catholic "without renouncing his moral and mental freedom." The contributions of Philip Schaff, German-American church historian [see DAB], are published here, apparently for the first time, in anticipation of his forthcoming book.
