Galena:

RECEPTION OF M[adison] Y. JOHNSON AND D. SHEEAN, ESQS., AT GALENA, ILLINOIS. ON THEIR RETURN, HONORABLY DISCHARGED, FROM THE BASTILES, FORTS LAFAYETTE, AND DELAWARE. THE SPEECHES DELIVERED ON THE OCCASION, AND AN ACCOUNT OF PRELIMINARY PROCEEDINGS.

Printed at the Office of the Democrat, Galena: 1863 8pp, folded, printed in double columns. Very Good. A rare Civil War item, recording the welcome that "friends of Constitutional liberty in the city of Galena" gave to two Galena Copperheads upon their release from "cruel tyrannic imprisonment." Speeches, ovations, and remarks of the heroes themselves are recorded, in honor of their efforts to "vindicate constitutional liberty" against "arbitrary and despotic acts" of the "imbecile" Lincoln administration. Each had been held without trial or charges for several months. The pamphlet ends with a poem by P.G. Ferguson, 'The Bastiled Democrat.' OCLC locates only three copies: the NY Historical Society, the NY Sch. of Interior Design, and the Newberry Library. FIRST EDITION. Not in Sabin, Bartlett, Eberstadt, Decker, Nevins, LCP, Monaghan.
