Larned calls the book "generally authentic," and that "Some valuable and interesting notices of Dutch and early English life in New York City and Albany appear here, also life-like portrayals of the experiences of pioneers in western New York. Many details as to dress, furniture, marriage customs, also many extracts from advertisements in old newspapers are given." And, it has a chapter on the Erie Canal.
