A great eulogy of Cooper who, as Clarke points out, was one of those "burning and shining lights:- who, to the learning of the scholar, united the virtues of the patriot; and to the easy familiarity of the companion, the seriousness and devotion of a christian." Pages 30-35, extracted from the Continental Journal, provide a biography of this man who was one of the founders of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, active in the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, and a strong supporter of "the cause of American freedom."
