Coffin, Paul:

A SERMON, PREACHED BEFORE HIS HONOR MOSES GILL, ESQ. LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR, THE HONORABLE THE COUNCIL, SENATE, AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS. MAY 29, 1799, BEING THE DAY OF GENERAL ELECTION.

Boston: 1799 31pp, half title, lightly to moderately foxed. Very Good. Arguing that good character is requisite for public office, Coffin also supports President Adams against the Jeffersonians. He endorses Adams's policy of "persevering negociation" with the French; but he condemns Paine's Age of Reason, "that infamous book...written in France...under the patronage of Mr. Munroe [James Monroe]," for spreading "infidel and atheistical principles." FIRST EDITION. Evans 35317.
