Cluskey, Mich. W.:

BUCHANAN AND BRECKINRIDGE. THE DEMOCRATIC HAND-BOOK, COMPILED BY...OF WASHINGTON CITY, D.C. RECOMMENDED BY THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE. THE SUCCESS OF THE DEMOCRACY ESSENTIAL FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE UNION AND THE PROTECTION OF THE INTEGRITY OF THE CONSTITUTION.

R.A. Waters, Washington: 1856 Disbound. 39, [1 blank], 263-304 pp [as issued]. Foxed with some age-toning, Good+. The Democratic ticket's massive defense of the opening of the Kansas-Nebraska Territory to slavery by repeal of the Missouri Compromise. This campaign pamphlet argues that the "anti-war disunionists" during the War of 1812 are the political ancestors of the "Black Republican Leaders now." Though Republicans charge that Southerners like Preston Brooks-- who nearly killed Senator Sumner by caning him-- "are all bullies and fighting men," their candidate Fremont is a "cool, calculating, revenge-seeking duellist." The pamphlet seeks the support of former Whigs, their Party having evaporated, and from Know-Nothing Fillmore men. An Appendix prints the primary documents concerning the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions of 1798 and 1799, as well as the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. FIRST EDITION. Sabin 13803. 113 NUC 0497098 [6]. Not in Miles, Decker, Eberstadt.
