A rare biography of Elwes, unrecorded on OCLC although Topham's other works on Elwes are well-represented there. ESTC locates only the Rylands Institute copy. Elwes was a wealthy British eccentric, critical of British conduct during the American Revolution, who clothed himself in rags and would endure much inconvenience to save himself a few pence, though he was worth about a million pounds.
