Parker, Samuel:

A SERMON, PREACHED BEFORE HIS HONOR THE LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR, THE...SENATE, AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS, MAY 29, 1793; BEING THE DAY OF GENERAL ELECTION.

Boston: 1793 42pp, stitched (first signature loose), untrimmed. Half title. Scattered light foxing. Very Good. Parker's sermon is based on Proverbs xiv, 34: "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people." The era is "manifestly tending to bring about some mighty revolution, among the nations of the earth. History has scarcely ever before furnished us, with an instance of a populous, and powerful nation, throwing off the yoke of despotism, and acquiring sentiments and habits, congenial to a great and free republick." But he condemns the spirit of "ferocious revenge" of the French Revolution. FIRST EDITION. Evans 25963.
