Grimke, Frederick:

AN ESSAY ON THE ANCIENTS AND MODERNS, BY THE HON. FREDERICK GRIMKE OF CHILICOTHE, OHIO.

1850 [n.p., 1850?]. [2 blank], [205]-216pp [as issued]. Original plain wrappers [light wear, ink inscription on front wrap], stitched. Light scattered foxing. Very Good. Grimke tries to explain why American literature has not yet measured up to the literature of European countries. He attributes this lag "chiefly to the extraordinary prosperity of the nation, since the revolutionary war. The thoughts of every one have been perpetually occupied with the animating and ever shifting scene without, and the mind has been rendered unwilling, and consequently unable, to give itself up to any pursuit which demanded the intense concentration of its faculties." In addition to the noted OCLC reference, OCLC records seven locations of an unpaginated printing. OCLC 43988640 [4]. Not in Morgan, Eberstadt, Sabin, Thomson.
