Opening salvo in a small pamphlet war between Douglass and Kenyon College. Dismissed as its President, Douglass says he had "but recently removed to Gambier; that he had changed his plans of life, and abandoned his professional pursuits at the east, with considerable sacrifice, for the express purpose of 'consecrating himself to the service of Kenyon College.'" Fearing that the insular and parochial community, unduly influenced by the College's power, will ignore the injustice of removing him "from an office generally considered permanent," Douglass names names and tells a story of conspiracy, jealousy, and cruelty unworthy of an academic institution.
