AN ORATION ON UNION, DELIVERED IN THE NEW DUTCH CHURCH IN THE CITY OF NEW-YORK, ON THE TWELFTH OF MAY, 1794. THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE TAMMANY SOCIETY, OR COLUMBIAN ORDER.

New York: Buel, 1794. 24pp, Disbound, half title. Scattered foxing, Good+. This oration on the nature of the Union-- emphasizing that we are "in fact, ONE PEOPLE"-- was unusual in an era when many Americans considered themselves, first and foremost, citizens of their respective States. The Tammany Society, or Columbian Order, was founded in 1789; it became a powerful political organization in New York City and County. Here Johnson-- a New York clergyman-- enumerates the "particular advantages attendant on the close and continued UNION of the States." Our unity is "marked by the very hand of nature." He recounts the commercial benefits of the Union, the protection that it provides against foreign powers, and the movement toward "one soul of harmony" generated by "a frequent intercourse between the citizens of these States." He argues the disastrous consequences should the Union be dissolved. FIRST EDITION. Evans 27169. Sabin 36241. 282 NUC 0125327 [9]. Not in Jenkins. Item #10969
