MEMORIAL OF THE SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES, AND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE OF KANSAS; ALSO, THE MAJORITY AND MINORITY REPORTS OF THE COMMITTEE ON TERRITORIES ON THE SAID CONSTITUTION.
Washington: Cornelius Wendell, Printer, 1856. 59, [1] pp, stitched, untrimmed. Light foxing to first and last pages, Very Good. The Memorialists urge Congress to organize Kansas as a State under the Free-State Topeka Constitution, which is printed here. The Memorial details the ongoing, chaotic civil war and necessity for the Territory's immediate organization. "About two hundred armed men, with seven pieces of artillery, made an attack upon the town of Lawrence, and held it in a state of siege for about two weeks. They made the attack without any provocation or illegal act on the part of the inhabitants of Lawrence. The enemy declared their intentions to destroy the town and slaughter its inhabitants; and nothing but the firmness and patriotic courage of those who rallied to protect the town saved it from destruction."
