These Maryland Whigs endorse Millard Fillmore for President. A Whig for most of his political life, Fillmore became the American or Know-Nothing candidate in 1856 after the sectional crisis broke the Whigs apart. These Whigs refuse to drift to the Democrats, now dominated by Cotton State southerners, or to the Republican Party, whose divisive tendencies they fear. The election of Fremont, the Republican candidate, would be "the death-knell of the Union."
