REPLY OF...OF OHIO, TO MR. HICKMAN, OF PENNSYLVANIA, ON DEMOCRATIC LOYALTY TO THE UNION: IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, FEBRUARY 19, 1862.

Washington: 1862. 8pp, Disbound, persistent light spot. Good+.

Vallandigham was Congress's most outspoken and prominent anti-War Democrat. He would be arrested in early 1863 on Lincoln's orders and banished to the Confederacy. Here he answers Hickman's "malicious libels" that he is disloyal and opposes the Union war effort. Emphasizing the role of the loyal opposition, he insists upon his duty "of vindicating the rights of the American citizen; and beyond that I have never gone." Much heated colloquy between Hickman and Vallandigham is reported here.
