He believed in trade barriers, especially "where a nation imposes high duties on our productions;" and argued that domestic production "creates a demand for such [articles] as were either unknown or produced in inconsiderable quantities." He prints four items, accompanied by his preface 'To The Reader.' They include, among others, a refutation of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations; and Addresses of Carey's Philadelphia Society for the promotion of National Industry. Carey calls the latter's publications "the first regular, systematic attempt to explain and defend the protecting system."
