Three poems are included-- the title poem, which had wide success in periodical circulation, presents Coan's 'Old Corporal' figure, a one-legged Union veteran, expressing contempt for unreconstructed Confederates; 'Re-Form at Hamburg,' about Southern attempts to deny the vote to the freedmen; and 'Midnight Bugle,' which evokes a spectre army of fallen Union soldiers cleaning up corrupt Washington. Reverend Coan was a Maine-born New Hampshire clergyman and Civil War veteran.
