Whig hopes crashed when their new President, William Henry Harrison, died soon after his inauguration. His Vice President, the Virginian John Tyler, was a shaky Whig at best.
"The People desired the early adoption of the policy which had been promised them by the Whig party." That policy emphasized restraints on Executive powers bloated by excesses of Harrison's Democratic predecessors, Jackson and Van Buren; re-establishment of the National Bank; and economy in government. But Tyler broke the "pledge of faithful adherence to the cardinal doctrines for which we struggled." This scarce call to arms cites chapter and verse.
