"Altho' his hardness of hearing was a great difficulty to him when debates were carried on, yet things being made known to him [to have his thoughts upon them] there always appeared in him such an accuracy of thought, such a wisdom and judiciousness in his observations, as were ever of great weight with us."
With, as issued, the separate title page 'Oratio Funebris,' a 'Portrait of the Doctor's Character...by one of his learned and much esteemed Friends,' and a 'poetical Essay wrote by a young gentleman, a student in the College.' A contemporary ink notation at the end of this poem identifies the 'young gentleman' as "President Willard, then a student of the College."
