Chicago: W.B. Sloan. [i.e., Buffalo: Jewett, Thomas & Co.], 1851. Original pictorial, leather-backed boards [rebacked]. 160pp, frontis engraving of Sloan's Depot and the American Temprance [sic] House. Moderately foxed, Good+.

The first edition probably issued from Chicago in 1848, and the "third" in 1849. This edition is quite scarce in its own right. "Walter B. Sloan was the first patent medicine 'king' of Chicago. His cures for man and beast were sold widely in the West." Byrd 1314. With a section on definitions "of words not in general use," and a variety of potions and recipes, the book also includes testimonials to the remarkable qualities of Sloan's 'Family Ointment,' "universally acknowledged to be an infallible remedy ...for promoting insensible perspiration, drawing out the inflammation from a wound, relieving pain of every kind."
The first 112 pages comprise 'The Complete Farrier;' and, with its own title page but continuous pagination, pages [113]-160 'The Complete Cattle Doctor.'
