LETTERS ADDRESSED TO HON. JAMES BUCHANAN, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, JANUARY 10TH AND 16TH, 1861, ON THE IMPENDING CRISIS OF THE COUNTRY, DENYING THE RIGHT OF SECESSION, ADVOCATING MEASURES TO SECURE TORTUGAS, KEY WEST AND FORTRESS MONROE.

Salem [MA]: 1866. Stitched, 8pp, light wear. Good+.

The frustrated Ward, a lifelong Democrat, urged President Buchanan in January 1861 to end the federal government's paralysis and perform his constitutional duty to secure the southern ports from secessionists' designs; and to garrison the forts in New York harbor, for it is common knowledge that its residents "have notoriously aided and abetted the Slave trade." His reason for publishing these letters now is unstated.
