THE END OF THE IRREPRESSIBLE CONFLICT. BY A MERCHANT OF PHILADELPHIA. PRINTED FOR THE AUTHOR.

Philadelphia: King & Baird, 1860. Original printed wrappers [lightly dusted and worn], stitched, 47pp. Light wear, Very Good.

Writing on November 5, 1860, White defends Southern slavery, and attacks William Seward, whom White calls "the acknowledged leader of the Republican party," for insisting that slavery be viewed as "a purely local, temporary, and exceptional institution." White argues that slavery is necessary because "the Ethiopian...is but a lazy overgrown child." Purporting to analyze Philadelphia's Free Negro population, he claims that the vast majority are unproductive paupers. Seward and his allies are guilty of "sectional jealousy," because only under slavery are Negroes productive.
