The first separate American edition, by a disciple and friend of Rousseau, of a scarce pastoral romance set in India. It is also found as published by Spotswood with the author's famous Paul and Virginia. First published in Paris as La Chaumiere Indienne in 1791, it tells the story of a learned traveler in search of truth and wisdom, who locates them in the cottage of an Indian pariah.
