The author, a native of Scotland, went to Nova Scotia in 1815. "His commonsense approach called attention to the subject and led to the formation of a provincial agricultural board of which he became secretary. His book was widely read both in the colonies and in Great Britain and, as late as 1851, J.F.W. Johnston, an agricultural expert, described it as 'superior to any other book of the time that I have read in any language.'" Oxford Companion to Canadian History and Literature.
