THE LETTERS OF AGRICOLA ON THE PRINCIPLES OF VEGETATION AND TILLAGE, WRITTEN FOR NOVA SCOTIA, AND PUBLISHED FIRST IN THE ACADIAN RECORDER.

Halifax, N[ova] S[cotia]: Holland & Co., 1822. 402, [10 Index] pp. Original boards with printed paper spine label [some rubbing, repairs, and spotting]. Untrimmed, moderately foxed. Spine and text block split into two halves [no loss of text]. Else, Good+.

The author, a native of Scotland, went to Nova Scotia in 1815. "His commonsense approach called attention to the subject and led to the formation of a provincial agricultural board of which he became secretary. His book was widely read both in the colonies and in Great Britain and, as late as 1851, J.F.W. Johnston, an agricultural expert, described it as 'superior to any other book of the time that I have read in any language.'" Oxford Companion to Canadian History and Literature.
