Ames gives unreserved support to President Lincoln, "God bless him!" No President has been "more thoroughly true and trusty-- more loyal and faithful to the Constitution and to the rights of the people." His "serious faults" include being "over-amiable toward offenders; else he would have unhorsed that man McClellan at the beginning of his shameful career of disobedience to superior orders." Lincoln's ability to hold the Border States, to "disarm Northern opposition," and to thwart the recognition of the Confederacy by foreign powers are monumental achievements. Also published in Philadelphia this year.
