National Republicans, later called Whigs, coalesced as a political party to oppose Andrew Jackson, deemed a dangerous despot for "subsidizing the periodical press," engaging in wholesale "political patronage" and "persecution on account of political sentiment." His opposition to federal subsidization of internal improvements and the Bank of the United States also render him anathema. The Meeting urges the election of Henry Clay, the focus of opposition to King Andrew.
