Stewart, a Whig, had charged that Cass, the Democrats' 1848 presidential nominee, had picked the taxpayers' pockets while Governor of the Michigan Territory and Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Stewart issued a pamphlet that included Cass's expense accounts and other documents to back up his charges.
Defending Cass, this pamphlet accuses the Whigs and Stewart of "making up a gross statement against General Cass and suppressing the truth in regard to the accounts of General Taylor." Taylor, say the Democrats, is guilty of even greater malfeasance than that which has been falsely charged against Cass.
