1800. Uncut, untrimmed. Lightly foxed and dusted, about Very Good. Samuel Brown had served in the 4th Massachusetts Regiment during the Revolutionary War. The regimental agent, Africa Hamlin, had failed to pay Brown and others the money due them for their service, as Hamlin had been "defrauded" of the pay certificates. Nelson tries to get Brown's money for him. The Committee takes a tough line, denying compensation on the ground that officers of each regiment had elected their regimental agent, on behalf of themselves and the general soldiery serving with them; in so doing, they assumed the risk of default.
