Breckinridge had been a strong Union voice in Kentucky during the Civil War. He sought, soon after War's end, to disqualify the secessionists from holding office in the reconstructed Presbyterian Church, on the ground that they were "unqualified, unfit and incompetent" to do so. Battle is joined, and the issues sharply disputed by Wilson in this "general denunciation against the northern Presbyterian Church" [Coleman].
