Washington: 1887. 7.75" x 9.75", two page letter with manuscript on rectos only. Script in body of letter differs from ink used in signature of 'Geo. F. Hoar'. Old folds, some browning at margins and edges of text, and verso of second page. Light dustsoiling. Good+.
George F. Hoar [1826-1904] was a Republican United States Senator from 1877 until his death in 1904. During his political career he campaigned for the rights of African Americans and Native Americans, as well as for the women's suffrage movement. [Wikipedia.]
Henry D. White, to whom the letter is written, was a member of the White Brothers law firm in New Haven, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale University in 1851 and joined a law firm founded by his father, Henry White. He served as a trustee of the New Haven Savings Bank for fifty years and was its counsel.
