SUPREME COURT OF APPEALS. GOVAN'S EXECUTOR VS. CLARKES, AND CLARKES VS GOVAN'S EXECUTOR. REPLY TO THE NOTES OF THE HON. JAMES LYONS AND J. LANE STERNE, ESQ., COUNSEL FOR THE CLARKES.

1877. Original blue printed wrappers [chipped], stitched, 21pp. Text clean and Very Good.

The question is whether the Estate of Edward Govan included certain slaves and, if so, their value. Many years after the transactions that were the subject of the suit had occurred, the Clarkes-- who evidently became obsessed with the perceived injustice to them-- claimed that William John Clarke, their ancestor, owned the slaves and had merely lent them to Govan, whose estate was liable to the Clarkes for the proceeds after the slaves were sold.
