TO THE VOTERS OF THE FOURTH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT.

Boston: Damrell & Moore, 1848. 13, [3 blanks] pp. Stitched. Lightly worn and foxed, Good+ to Very Good.

Hoar and others urge voters to re-elect anti-slavery Whig Congressman John Palfrey, against challenges from a Nativist Whig and a National Democrat. This scarce pamphlet emphasizes Palfrey's "sincere and disinterested attachment to the cause of Human Liberty." His opposition to the Mexican War and the extension of slavery demonstrate his sound judgment on the crucial issues of the day. "By a fortune which seems too appropriate to be called accident, the seat on the floor of Congress so long held by the venerated [John Quincy] Adams, has fallen to the lot of Palfrey. Is it not well that Massachusetts should still have a representative who shall place questions involving human Liberty high above all others in this regard?" Alas, Palfrey lost his bid for re-election.
