RENUNCIATION OF POPERY. BY...LATE A PRIEST IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH.

Philadelphia: Stereotyped by L. Johnson, for the Author, 1833. 64pp, stitched in original printed wrappers [bit of wear]. Foxed moderately, Good+.

An expose of Romanism, in the 'I leap over the wall' genre. Various Philadelphia Protestant ministers endorse it, praise the author, and piously pray for "those of his friends who are left behind, in darkness and in ignorance, in that church." Smith tells his story, how he was misled, and how he finally saw the light. After starting life in Philadelphia, he moved to St. Louis. Its unhealthy climate and "the paroxysms of a violent fever" foolishly led to a "partnership in the fur-trade." He lost his shirt; then, vulnerable, he wandered into the Catholic Church. Three editions were published in 1833; this is the stated third.
