Treasury Secretary Gallatin reports on the settlement of land claims in the District of Vincennes, with information on the derivation of settlers' titles. Claims were founded on grants from French or British governments, grants from Congress of 400 acres to each head of family residing in Vincennes, and as rewards for service in the militia of Vincennes. Hundreds of listings show each original donee of the lands, the current claimant, and the acreage involved. Rejected claims are also listed.
This is one of the earliest and most comprehensive compilations of the earliest settlers and owners of lands in the Vincennes District.
