This pamphlet details the prelude to the Dartmouth College Case-- the struggle between President John Wheelock and the College's Trustees. Amid prolonged and noisy public clamour, the Trustees removed Wheelock after he wrote 'Sketches of the History of Dartmouth College,' an attack on the Trustees and Wheelock's other adversaries. With Democrats favoring Wheelock and Federalists opposing him, the Democratic Legislature then changed Dartmouth's Charter, setting the stage for the Supreme Court's landmark decision forbidding legislative impairment of contracts.
