Allen was sentenced to 35 years in the State pen for "shooting up" the Hillsville courthouse in 1911. five people-- including the judge, Sheriff, and Commonwealth Attorney-- were killed by "members of the Allen clan." Allen, pardoned after 13 years, published his Memoirs, claiming that his role in the crime was not premeditated. Two members of the Allen family were executed.
