The Kentuckian Shaffner was an inventor. An early promoter of the telegraph, he also was awarded several patents on the manufacture and use of nitro glycerin, particularly in the construction of tunnels, such as the Hoosac Tunnel. This broadsheet contains Shaffner's 27 Instructions on the effective and safe use of the explosive. The verso is a list of thirteen kinds of Accidents which have occurred with nitro glycerin. "The following accidents have occurred with Nitro Glycerin in the different parts of the world, which are given for general information."
