In this pre-Gettysburg debate, Copperheads in the Pennsylvania legislature object to Andrew Johnson's speaking at the Capitol. Republicans justly state that Johnson's "counsel and his voice were ever against secession. His efforts were earnest and vigorous against treason and the traitors." Rejecting an attempt to extend a similar invitation to ex-General McClellan, a Republican legislator states that, although McClellan had "the most finely equipped, best fed, and the bravest army of men that ever stood on the earth one hundred and twenty thousand strong he stood for eight long months in the presence of an enemy of forty thousand men with wooden guns."
