Croswell was a Boston Minister and champion of Whitefield and the Great Awakening in New England. In this work-- quoting Goodwin, Marshall, Hervey, Luther, and Cotton Mather-- Croswell opposes any form of works justification ["Arminians and Antinomians"]. "Again-- is it so that by the Obedience of one many are justify'd, this condemns that Doctrine which the World, the christian World is mad after, viz. that 'tis by the Obedience of Two that we are made Righteous; that the Sinner must not trust only to the Obedience of Christ, but obey himself, in order to his Justification...The Papists hug this Doctrine; and so do many Protestants too:-- 'tis the polite, the fashionable Religion among us. O how many Sermons are preached in this Strain; and sometimes in this Town!"
