VALEDICTORY ADDRESS DELIVERED AT THE CLOSING EXERCISES OF TOLAND MEDICAL COLLEGE, NOVEMBER 4TH, 1869, L.C. LANE, M.D., PROFESSOR OF ANATOMY. PUBLISHED AT THE REQUEST OF THE CLASS.

San Francisco: Spear & Cq [sic], 1869. Original printed wrappers, stitched, 18pp. Near Fine.

The West Coast's first medical school was established in 1858 at the University of the Pacific, a Methodist Episcopal college in Santa Clara, California. It opened for business in 1859. The driving force behind its creation was Dr. Samuel Cooper. Levi Cooper Lane, Cooper's nephew, joined its faculty in 1861. After Toland Medical College opened in 1864, the University of the Pacific's medical school closed its doors and Dr. Lane joined the Toland faculty. He became a pioneer in American medical education, and wrote the first American textbook on surgery of the head and neck. OCLC locates five copies of this pamphlet, under two accession numbers.
