"This globe is a vale of tears, a valley of pain and trouble." A scarce and gloomy sermon. John M. Roberts [1775-1822] was received into the Charleston Baptist Association in 1793 and sent in 1794 by Richard Furman, a well known and influential Baptist leader, to attend Rhode Island College. He graduated in 1796, was ordained, and in 1799 became pastor of High Hills Church in Charleston. He opened Roberts' Academy, a private school which was adopted by the Association as "the chief agency for education of beneficiaries of the General Committee." Roberts was elected secretary of the General Committee of the Association in 1798 and served in this position for more than twenty years before suffering a fatal illness which caused him to take his own life.
