THE BARBOUR DYNASTY CONTRASTED WITH THE "MAHONE DYNASTY." A REPLY TO HON. JOHN S. BARBOUR'S PUNGOTEAGUE LETTER.

[Petersburg, VA? 1886]. 13, [3 blanks] pp. Disbound and lightly toned, else Very Good.

General Mahone used his war record and railroad connections to become a political powerhouse, and leader of the Virginia 'Readjusters'-- more or less populists who favored a reduction in state indebtedness-- in their battles against the 'Stalwarts.' Many bitter Virginians viewed him as a demagogue who had-- unfairly, in their eyes-- built his success on support from newly-enfranchised Negro voters. This pamphlet denounces the Democratic Party's "usual Bourbon impotence in dealing with public affairs." John Barbour's leadership of the Virginia Democrats is scorned, and his public record ridiculed.
