A COMPENDIUM OF NATURAL PHILOSOPHY: ADAPTED TO THE USE OF THE GENERAL READER, AND OF SCHOOLS AND ACADEMIES.

Charleston: Published by S. Babcock & Co., 1837. Original calf, with gilt-lettered red morocco spine label and gilt spine bands. A solid, firm binding with just a bit of wear at the spine ends. iv, [5]-359, [1 blank] pp. Front endpapers foxed, early leaves with a dampstain at blank outer margin, else a clean text with many illustrations. Good+ or so.

Despite the Charleston imprint, I doubt this work was published in South Carolina. Olmsted was a professor at Yale, he entered the copyright in Connecticut in 1837, and the imprint includes booksellers from whom the book may be purchased in several cities. The book treats the laws of motion and force, with practical applications to projectiles, gunnery, and machinery; electricity, magnetism, and optics, as well as other subjects.
