THE PERILS AND THE SECURITY OF OUR COUNTRY. A SERMON, DELIVERED IN THE REF. PROT. DUTCH CHURCH, OF WILLIAMSBURGH, L.I., ON THANKSGIVING DAY, DEC. 12, 1850. BY REV. ELBERT S. PORTER, PASTOR OF SAID CHURCH.

Williamsburgh, L.I. Published by Joseph C. Gandar [New York: Kneeland, Printer]. 1850. 29, [1 blank] pp. Original printed front wrapper [detached], stitched. Lightly toned, light chipping at blank edges with a few closed tears [no loss]. Good.

"It would seem to be a law of Providence that human progress should be secured by means of fierce collisions..." Porter warns of the dangers in lusting for material gain and-- after the bruising struggle over the Compromise of 1850-- "the blind and bigoted and passionate rage of party spirit." He denounces slavery as a great evil, but argues that abolitionists who would ignore the law create even greater evils. OCLC records a number of institutional locations for this item. Item #29600
