The Providence Tool Company was formed in the early 1840s by Jeremiah Arnold and William Field, originally under the name of William Field & Co. In addition to producing common tools and machine parts, the Company expanded to include the manufacture of weapons and ammunition. It was responsible for supplying the United States with over 70,000 Springfield 1861 rifle muskets during the Civil War; in the early 1870s it contracted with the Turkish government to produce 850,000 firearms.
